NEW REGISTRATION REQUIREMENT
NEW REGISTRATION REQUIREMENT FOR 2016-2017: RESPECT IN SPORT PARENT PROGRAM
April 1,2016
The Ontario Hockey Federation (OHF) has announced that beginning for the 2016-17 hockey season, at least one parent/guardian of every minor hockey player in the OHF (which includes the North York Knights Hockey Association (the “Knights”) and all other hockey organizations and clubs in the Greater Toronto Area) will be required to take the Respect In Sport (RIS) Parent Program prior to a player being permitted to participate in any Hockey Canada programming. This has been rolled out in many Hockey Canada Branches and is already in place in the Ontario Minor Hockey Association and Alliance Hockey within the OHF. The roll out in these areas have all been successful and has yielded positive results.
This requirement applies to all levels of hockey including House League and Competitive levels. The cost of taking the program is $12 and is paid directly on-line when taking the program. A participant’s parent/guardian will only be required to take the program once. There is no requirement for re-taking the program annually. Each hockey association will be able to track compliance with the Hockey Canada Registry (HCR). Each player’s profile on the HCR will be updated when his/her parent completes the RIS Parent Program so each association will be able to monitor compliance by reviewing the participant’s profile.
Respect in Sport Parent Program: Overview
How Do I Complete Program?
Prior to the 2016 – 2017 hockey season, at least one parent or guardian of each player in the Knights must complete the online Respect in Sports (RIS) Parent Program as a condition of the child’s registration and participation in all House League and Select programs. The course takes approximately one hour to complete. A link to the Login in provided below.

Does a parent have to have taken the RIS Parent Program before the player registers? Answer – No. However, parents of House League players will have to have completed the on-line course prior to September 1st , 2016 as no player will be assigned to a Knights House league team or be allowed to participate in on-ice activities with the Knights unless the program has been completed and the RIS Parent Program registration with the HCR has been verified by the Knights.
** Please note that even if you have a Speakout/Respect in Sport registration because you have been already been a coach or other volunteer, you are still required to have at least one parent or guardian of each family complete the RIS Parent Program as the RIS Parent Program is NOT THE SAME as Speakout. **
How Much does the Program Cost?
Answer – the program cost is $12.00/family (1 child = 1 RIS course / 4 children = 1 RIS course). Only one family member must complete the course; however the material remains available to the entire family on a perpetual basis. The Knights do not benefit financially from the implementation of this Program.
Where Do the Costs Get Allocated?
The following is the breakdown of the fee for the program: $ 1 goes to Hockey Canada for E-learning Fund Contribution and Administration of the program (HCR integration, etc.) $ 1 to the Branch/Member Partner (i.e. GTHL) for promotion of the program and administration $ 1 to Canadian Red Cross as Curriculum Partners $ 1 to PayPal/Invoicing Fees $ 8 to Respect Group for the maintenance of the program in both official languages, hosting, platform optimization, content updates (annually), 24×7 bilingual technical support, local user support and registrar training
Frequently Asked Questions
- What if the Parent does not have a credit card? – Answer – Pre-paid one-time use credit cards can be purchased at numerous retail locations and can be used to pay.
- What if the Parent does not have a computer? – Answer – Most public libraries provide free computer access.
- What if the Parent has a language barrier? – Answer – The program is available in French and English. For parents whose first language is not French or English can ask a child, friend or relative to sit with them as they go through the program, and assist/translate for them. There are also many Cultural Centers in the GTA that can assist the families. This program has been implemented within municipalities surrounding the GTA including communities that have parents whose first language is not French or English.
- Is this required every year? Answer – No, once you have completed it you are certified and there are currently no plans for requalification/recertification.
- How will local administrators/registrars know whether or not a parent has completed the program? Answer – The Respect in Sport Parent Program is connected to the Hockey Canada Registry (HCR). Once a parent completes the Parent Program, the child’s name and date of birth as entered by the parent in the Child Management page of the program is automatically sent to the HCR where it searches for the same name and DOB. If it is found, the player profile in the HCR is updated to indicate the player has a parent who has completed the program. None of the parent’s information is transferred to the HCR. Registrars will also have direct access to the Respect in Sport – Parent Program data-base.
- What if a parent took the Parent Program through another sport. Do they have to take it again? Answer – No. Parents can import their parent certification over to the GTHL/Knights parent program data-base. Importing instructions are very simple, and can be completed in a couple of minutes. There is no cost to import an existing certification.
- If a parent has already has taken the Respect in Sport activity leader program (Speakout) for coaches, do they still have to take the Parent Program? Answer – Yes. The Parent Program is different in content from the Activity Leader program for coaches. The Parent Program was created at the request of hockey coaches, and most coaches find the content very beneficial.
- How long is my Parent Program Certification good for? Answer – There is no expiry.
- What happens if a new child is added to the system in future years? Answer – The parent/guardian would be able to add the certification to that child’s profile on the child management page of their Respect in Sport profile so there will be no need to complete the program again.
